Here is something every homeowner should know. Your roof works for you every day of the year, and most people never think about it until something goes wrong.
After 10 years of roof maintenance here in Branson, MO, I can tell you the homeowners who catch small problems early almost never end up with big ones.

How to inspect your roof safely
You do not need to climb up there to learn a lot about your roof.
Walk the perimeter of your home and look up. Use binoculars if you have them.
You are looking for missing or cracked shingles, dark streaks, sagging areas, and anything that looks out of place along the eaves.
Do this after every big storm, and take a photo when you spot something. That record helps more than people realize when it comes time for an inspection or an insurance claim.
Roof Maintenance in Branson, MO: Cleaning Shingles the Right Way
This is where I see the most damage done by good intentions.
Those dark streaks on a roof are usually algae, and they can trap moisture against your shingles over time. Cleaning them off helps, but how you clean matters more than whether you clean.
Never use a pressure washer on asphalt shingles. The force strips the granules right off the surface, and those granules are what protect your roof from the sun. Once they are gone, you have shortened the life of that roof and likely voided the warranty at the same time.
A low pressure soft wash with plain water is what the manufacturers recommend. Gentle, patient, and safe for the shingle.
Do not forget the gutters and the attic
Your gutters are part of your roof system. When they clog, water backs up along the roof edge and works its way under the shingles.
Clean them after heavy leaf drop and after storms. Check that the downspouts are actually carrying water away from your foundation.
Then step into your attic once or twice a year. Stains on the framing, a musty smell, or damp insulation are all early warnings that something above is letting water in.

When to call a professional
Handle the easy things yourself. Ground level checks, clearing accessible gutters, watching for changes over time.
Call someone when the roof is steep or hard to reach, when shingles are cracked or missing, when a leak keeps coming back, or when the problem involves flashing or roof penetrations. And any time getting on a ladder feels unsafe, that is your answer right there.
Why we follow the manufacturer guidelines
At Don Roofing and Siding we install Owens Corning products, and we follow their installation and maintenance guidelines on every job.
That is not a small detail. Manufacturer warranties depend on the roof being installed and cared for the way the manufacturer specifies. Cutting corners can quietly cost a homeowner their coverage without them ever knowing it happened.
We would rather do it right and have that warranty stand behind you.
